A shadowed night,
The moon; dark,
A wolf howled,
The hunting bark.
The thrumming forest,
With its hidden depths,
And its slinking hunters,
And eyes glinting death.
Against wet grass,
Padded feet,
A flash of fur,
Midst shivering leaves.
A guttural growl,
From the Alpha male,
He called the pack,
To track a trail.
The prey was scented!
The pack now stalking,
The sweet flesh,
Of the deer-herd sleeping.
Those deer,
Lulled to a deadly slumber,
Vulnerable,
Even in their numbers.
The young nestled,
The old slept,
And none heard approach,
The danger that crept.
Those stealthy predators,
In shifting shadows,
With barbaric grins,
Those deadly foes.
Up ahead the meadow,
Where the deer lay unaware,
In silence the wolves circled,
To ambush the peaceful lair.
A silent signal given,
The wraiths did awaken,
One strong pounce,
And the deer overtaken!
Shocked! Petrified!
The herd scampered,
But too late!
Razor teeth hampered!
Some escaped,
The bloody onslaught,
Scrapping away,
Before they were caught.
Left and right,
Then left again,
The wounded limped,
With torturous pain.
The forest filled,
With agonized bleating,
As the wolves brought down,
The injured; writhing.
The peaceful glade,
Was no more,
Greens turned red,
With blood and gore.
The last scream died,
The wolves gorged their kills,
And the night was silent,
The night was still.
The moon; dark,
