As 2010 began, music was the last thing on Avenged Sevenfold's minds. The tragic death of drummer Ji9mmy 'The Rev' Sullivan on December 28, 2009, was utterly devastating for his life long friends, and in their grief, M. Shadows, Synyster Gates, Zacky Vengeance and Johnny Christ weren't sure that being in a rock band really mattered at all any more. But, urged on by Jimmy's family, and with the help of Jimmy's favourite drummer, Dream theater founder Mike Portnoy, the Huntington Beach quartet finished their fifth album Nightmare as a triubute to their late brother. An often harrowing, nakedly emotional album, Nightmare displaced Eminem's Recovery from the top of the Billboard 200 album chart in August, giving the band their first US Number One album. The Californian band's future remains unwritten, but 2010 will forever be remembered as the year they amplified The Rev's lagacy with strength, courage and dignity.
