Um. Couple of months. Three months I think. My friend and I do this for shits and giggles for some reason.
And if you want to get better, it's all about practice and listening to the right stuff. Stuff like Eric B and Rakim and Crooked I really open up your mind to the possibilities of metaphors and word play. The more you practice, the easier you'll find that words come to you. It's just like everything else. Practice. =]
